There is an increasing number of ITS applications in which it is more and more necessary to detect the vehicle speed. 

The speed information can be used for statistical, sanctioning or even dissuasive purposes.

A typical dissuasive application is to display the speed on variable message signs when the speed limit is exceeded. Statistical applications are used to monitor vehicle speed at various times of the day in order to study the level of traffic flow.

The most accurate sensors for speed detection are sensors with doppler radar technology at 24 GHz. Through a successful installation and configuration they can reach an accuracy of 99%.

There are sensors for one lane and 

Esistono sia sensori che rilevano una sola corsia che sensori che rilevano più di una corsia e denominati multilane. I sensori a singola corsia sono solitamente più precisi nella classificazione dei veicoli (fatta per lunghezza) mentre quelli multicorsia hanno il vantaggio di una semplice installazione in quanto possono monitorare fino a 8-10 corsie se montati su un palo laterale di altezza 10-15 m.
